If you are an angler, you know that the Cumberland River tailwaters below Wolf Creek Dam aren’t just “good”—they are legendary. This 75-mile stretch of cold, clear water is home to the Kentucky state record for both Brown Trout (21 lbs) and Rainbow Trout (14 lbs, 6 oz). People travel from all over the country to cast a line here, and at Old Chimney RV Park, we are located just minutes from the best access points on the river.
Whether you’re a fly fishing purist or a weekend warrior with a spinning reel, here is everything you need to know about fishing the Cumberland River while staying at our park.
The “Big Four”: What You’re Catching
The Cumberland is unique because it stays cold year-round thanks to the deep-water release from Lake Cumberland. This creates a premier habitat for four main species:
- Rainbow Trout: The most abundant and hard-fighting fish in the river.
- Brown Trout: The giants. Look for these near woody cover and deep holes.
- Brook & Cutthroat Trout: These are regularly stocked and offer a beautiful, unique catch for Kentucky anglers.
- Striped Bass: Don’t be surprised if a 30-pound “striper” hammers your lure—they migrate up from the lower river to enjoy the cold water!
Top Spots Near Old Chimney RV Park
When you stay with us at 332 Old Hwy 127, you are strategically positioned between the river’s most productive spots:
1. Wolf Creek Dam & Hatchery Creek
Just a short drive away, the area immediately below the dam offers incredible wade fishing at low water. Hatchery Creek is a man-made stream that mimics a natural trout environment and is a “must-fish” for any visitor.
2. Helm’s Landing
Located about 4.5 miles downstream from the dam, Helm’s Landing is a favorite for both boaters and waders. It features deep channels and rocky shoals that hold trophy-sized fish.
3. Boyd’s Bar
Accessible via Ray Mann Road, this is one of the most productive wading shoals on the river. It’s an easy-to-wade bottom that allows you to get right into the heart of the action.
The Secret to Success: The Generation Schedule
The most important thing to know about the Cumberland River is the Wolf Creek Dam Generation Schedule. When the dam is generating electricity, the water rises fast and wading becomes dangerous. When the turbines are off, the river “bottoms out” and becomes a wader’s paradise.
John’s Local Tip: Always check the predicted generation schedule before you head out. You can call the Wolf Creek Dam information line or check the TVA/USACE websites. If you aren’t sure how to read the schedule, text John at (270) 216-0677—he’s helped many of our guests time their trips perfectly!
Essential Gear & Flies
If you’re fly fishing, you can’t go wrong with these local favorites:
- Midges (Size 18-22): Zebra midges in red or black work year-round.
- Woolly Buggers: Great for imitating baitfish and crayfish, especially for big Browns.
- Sowbugs & Scuds: These are the “bread and butter” of the river’s ecosystem.
Need a fishing license? Everyone 16 and older needs a Kentucky fishing license AND a trout permit to fish the tailwaters. You can buy these easily online at fw.ky.gov.
