We have exciting news for bourbon enthusiasts and adventurers alike! Horse Soldier Bourbon is set to create a world-class distillery experience in Somerset-Pulaski County, just a short drive from Old Chimney RV Park. This $200-million project will transform the former Waitsboro Hills Golf Course into a 227-acre distillery paradise overlooking Lake Cumberland. The Horse Soldier Farms will not only produce exceptional bourbon but also offer a collection of experiences that celebrate both the spirit of bourbon and community.
A Legacy of Valor and Craftsmanship
The story of Horse Soldier Bourbon is one of bravery and patriotism. On October 19, 2001, twelve Green Berets from the 5th Special Forces Group rode into Afghanistan on horseback, marking the first time U.S. troops had done so since World War II. These “Horse Soldiers” undertook a daring mission shortly after the 9/11 attacks, a story that was later immortalized in the movie “12 Strong.”
After retiring from military service, these brave men discovered a passion for bourbon. Their journey led them to create Horse Soldier Bourbon, a brand that embodies their values and love for Kentucky’s signature industry. Now, they bring their craft to Somerset, where their military story began on the banks of the Cumberland River.
Building a Dream in Somerset
The vision for Horse Soldier Farms is ambitious and inspiring. The project promises to bring over 400 jobs to the Somerset-Pulaski County area and will be a key attraction on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®. The distillery will feature 12 fermentation vats in perfect formation around a column still made with metal from the Statue of Liberty. Other highlights include a water feature and stillhouse that pay tribute to the Twin Towers and a replica of the America’s Response Monument from Ground Zero.
In addition to bourbon production, Horse Soldier Farms will offer a variety of activities for visitors and residents. The village will include shops, community rooms, a chapel, an event center, and health and wellness facilities. With plans for a luxury lodge, cabins, and a premier culinary destination, Horse Soldier Farms aims to be a family-friendly venue filled with events, festivals, and concerts.
The Community Impact
Horse Soldier Bourbon’s arrival in Somerset is a testament to the community’s potential and the shared vision of its leaders. Somerset Mayor Alan Keck has been instrumental in bringing this project to life, seeing it as a way to enhance the local tourism industry and solidify Somerset’s place on the Bourbon Trail. The collaboration between Horse Soldier Bourbon and the Somerset-Pulaski Economic Development Authority (SPEDA) has made this dream a reality.
